This essay aims at introducing the phenomenon of transgressing the medium of painting, as it took place in Polish art in the 1960s. This phenomenon is discussed here in relation to the tradition of the pre-war modernism on one hand, and the philosophical question of the possibility of an end of a certain historical process as such, on the other. At the beginning of the essay the question “What with painting, then?” is quoted after the influential art historian and critic Mieczysław Porębski, who was asking it shortly after the end of WWII, in order to show how the avant-garde artistic experiments of the late 1950s and the 1960s in Poland were indebted to the early avant-garde, and in particular the constructivist art of Władysław Strzemiński and his theoretical concepts.
